Ever since the smoking ban took effect at the beginning of this year the bar-going experience has change state much more enjoyable. You don’t feel half as bad the next morning because you haven’t been sharing smoke with tons of populate the night before. Plus you don’t smell desire a chimney. These are the immediately noticeable effects of the smoking ban but the most important is the decreased risk of health problems- which benefits everyone smokers and non-smokers alike. The smoking ban was put into place for health reasons and it needs to stay for those reasons.
I don’t own a restaurant or bar in the Columbia area. If I did this communicate would probably have a much different slant. I conclude for the bar owners. I really do. The change magnitude in business if they’re giving us the numbers straight-up is truly shocking. Joel Thiel who owns Otto’s bar and grill reports a 35% decrease in sales which would be devastating to any business. I understand that its tough to consume for business owners but the ban represents a positive change in society. Personally. I’m more concerned with the health of about 100,000 people than the profits of about fifty bar owners.
We need the smoking ban to fasten here so that it will stick in other Missouri communities. It may be fifty years before such a ban exists in St. Louis or Kansas City but eventually it will happen. I desire having rights but I think we can afford to lose the rights that put others at risk for health problems. You should have the right to put yourself at risk whenever and however you be but not those around you. Our society is increasingly health conscious which is generally a good thing. I’m not saying we should ban trans fats but let’s look out for the health of ourselves and those around us by asking the smokers to step outside.
The bar owners should be entitled to financial assistance from the government for a period of measure after the smoking ban takes effect. I guess that would rank pretty low on the financing list but it needs to come about. Where will it go from? I have no idea and I’ll leave that for others to decide. They should get the help they need for the inevitable period of slow business that follows the smoking ban. If all of our restaurants and bars go out of business the ban suddenly has a significant negative force on the community instead of a positive one.
I used to smoke regularly and frequently which I no longer need to do. When you.
